whipped yogurt with berries

Whipped yogurt with strawberries is a new favorite dessert in our home. Fresh berries are macerated with honey and lemon zest and topped with greek yogurt that’s been whipped with a splash of heavy cream. A touch of sugar from the honey balances the tartness of berries, for a refreshing and healthy-ish summertime treat.

Weeknight desserts are a much contested topic in our home. Kenny and I both love sweets but we also want to feel healthy and live a balanced life. Squares of dark chocolate and hot tea are a go-to but when temperatures rise we want something more refreshing.

On a mission to make a summer dessert that’s fast, fresh and healthier than ice cream, I turned to Greek yogurt. Combining full fat, high protein Greek yogurt with some heavy cream made a perfectly balanced topping for fresh berries. We like to top our bowls with a bit of mini chocolate chips, adding texture and…well…chocolate(!) to the mix.

You can make the recipe as is or try an almond twist by adding 1/4 teaspoon almond extract and topping the dish with toasted sliced almonds. Whatever you choose, this whipped yogurt with strawberries is a fantastic way to indulge without the guilt.

other variations you can try:

  • add lemon zest to the yogurt and top a bowl of blueberries
  • sweeten the yogurt with maple syrup, dollop over banana slices, and top with candied pecans or walnuts
  • add 1 tablespoon of coco powder to the yogurt and sweeten with powdered sugar

While you’re at it, try one of these other summer desserts:

Whipped yogurt:

  • 1, 5.3 ounce container whole fat greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 Tablespoon honey, maple syrup or powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of kosher salt

Macerated strawberries:

  • 1 pint strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon honey, maple syrup or powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest (optional)

Optional toppings:

  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Sliced almonds
  • Chopped pistachios

  1. Scoop the yogurt into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the heavy whipping cream honey, vanilla extract and salt to the bowl.
  3. Use a hand mixer to whip the yogurt until thickened and the mixer leaves ribbons in the yogurt, about 3-5 minutes on medium high speed. Taste the whipped yogurt and add more honey if you prefer. Whip the yogurt again if you add more honey.
  4. Refrigerate the whipped yogurt for 30 minutes while you prepare the strawberries.
  5. Quarter or slice the strawberries, based on your preference.
  6. In a large bowl, toss together the strawberries, honey and lemon zest (if using). Let the strawberries sit at room temperature until they’re glistening and have released some of their juices.
  7. Divide the strawberries into two serving bowls, top with the chilled whipped yogurt and mini chocolate chips or almonds slices (if using).
